Need for Speed:Underground’da oyuncular aldıkları arabalara daha güçlü motor parçaları, daha güzel dış parçalar alabiliyorlardı. Oyun ayrıca çeşitli logo, renk, yapıştırmalar ile görünen ve görünmeyen parçaların değiştirilebilmesine olanak sağlıyordu. Tüm bu değişiklikleri yapabildiğiniz arabanız ile yasadışı sokak yarışlarına katılabiliyordunuz. Ayrıca bu yarışları kazandıkça daha fazla parçanın kilidini açabiliyorduk.

İlkine ek olarak iki değişik yarış türü daha barındırıyor Need For Speed: Underground 2. URL ve Street X adlı yarışlardan URL özel pistlerde birkaç tur atılması amacını taşırken Street X, Drift yarışlarındaki pistlerde, üç rakip ile finish çizgisine ilk ulaşan olmaya çalışılıyor.
